92+ points “Deep garnet-purple in colour the 2010 Keyneton Euphonium is a blend of 70% Shiraz 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot that reveals lovely crushed blueberry and warm blackberry notes fused with hints of blackcurrant cordial vanilla dried Provençal herbs and mint. Medium to full-bodied it has a concentrated and muscular core supported by a crisp acid line and a firm backbone of grainy tannins throughout the long finish.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

A phenomenal blend of Shiraz (from 50-year-old vines) Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in Eden Valley and Barossa Valley matured in French oak for 18 months before bottling. Keyneton Euphonium is a dark melange of cassis blackberry plum crumble sage bay leaf vanilla cedar and black pepper that has Sunday roast written all over it. Henschke Keyneton Euphonium is a wine that will continue to mature and evolve for 20+ years. Most vintages are consumed far too young so it’s a wonderful treat to stumble across a back vintage like this with a decade under its belt.

The Henschke winery is based in Keyneton named after the pioneering pastoralist Joseph Keynes. This village became a hub for music and culture becoming home to the Henschke Family Brass Band which was founded in 1888. The band featured many instruments including the cornet and the clarinet amongst others but the family’s favourite was the B flat euphonium hence the name of this wine. Like its namesake this wine shines reverberates and is laced with history.

The Henschke family have been making wine in Australia’s Eden Valley since 1868. From the biodynamically farmed Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone vineyards Stephen and Prue Henschke create two of Australia’s most sought-after wines. The vines used to make their masterpiece Hill of Grace were planted in 1860 and the wine itself is one of the very best in the world.
