Awarded an enormous 95 points by James Halliday’s Wine Companion this Chardonnay comes from the best blocks growing on Howard Park’s Allingham vineyard in the Karridale sub-region of Margaret River. Named after Muriel Allingham a much-loved mother and grandmother to the Burch family the wine from this vineyard is a reminder of her being somewhat traditional but with an elegance warmth and cheery disposition. Barrel fermented and matured in French oak on the lees for 10 months the Allingham Chardonnay has delicately nuanced notes of honeysuckle orange blossom vanilla pod peach nectarine lemon curd pear drop nougat oatmeal and toasted cashews. Finishing up with a twist of refreshing lime this wine feels like it leans more towards Burgundy’s influence than to that of the traditional Aussie blockbuster style. A fine choice for Christmas dinner possibly?
