Gold Medal “Round and enjoyable mouthfeel with dried fruit flavours notes of figs honey and plums. Delicate and harmonious with well mastered woodnotes of vanilla and toffee.” – Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2020

Janneau was founded by Pierre Etienne Janneau in 1851 (under the reign of France’s first president Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte) and represents one of Armagnac’s oldest and most award-winning houses. Their vast stocks and unparalleled collection of aged single-barrel Armagnacs enable the producer to release rare expressions unlike any other. Famed for their signature distillation and those Basque decanter bottles this is a producer that should be on every brandy lover’s radar.

This 20-year-old X.O. was crafted from Ugni Blanc and Baco 22a grapes growing in the Ténarèze and Bas Armagnac regions. These grapes were harvested in October gently pressed and left to ferment naturally without any additions much like the very fashionable ‘natural wine’ movement. These wines are then distilled over winter allowing the cool weather to maintain all the freshness. The process is a complex one using a Charentais pot still much like those used for making Cognac. Two successive distillations capture the heart and essence of this glorious eau-de-vie. The 72% ABV spirit is then filled into oak barrels from the forests of Gascony and Limousin where it remained for a minimum of 20 years deep in the Janneau’s cellars in the town of Condom (no snickering at the back there). What is finally filled into that gorgeous decanter after more than two decades can only be described as an elixir…

Attractive and pronounced on the nose aromas of hazelnuts candied ginger blossom and vanilla combine with a multitude of complex and developed rancio undertones. Silky smooth and incredibly intense in the mouth a cascade of fig prune and nut nuances slowly unwind on the mid-palate leading to an explosively flavoursome and spectacularly long finish which displays notes of honey marmalade black pepper and woody spices. A wonderful addition to any spirits collection this rare release would also make a special birthday present or anniversary gift especially in that stunning gift box.
