John Crabbie & Co stopped making whisky in the 1970s. But they’re back with a bang. This brand new single malt is a reimagining of the company’s original 8 Year Old blends brought up-to-date for the 21st Century. And it has already picked up a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018.

On tasting John Crabbie & Co. 8 Year Old Charles Maclean – described by The Times as “Scotland’s leading whisky expert” – said: “The nose initially presents breakfast cereals and evolves into fruit loaf with hints of dried apple. It has a smooth texture and sweet taste with a medium-length finish. Adding water brings a slight waxiness and fruitiness to the aroma and a spice to the finish.”

Silky and charming but not without a little peppery fire and a pinch of orange peel the distillery that produced this classic dram is a closely guarded secret. But if the rumours that we’ve heard are true and it were to be leaked this would sell out immediately.

John Crabbie is a whisky legend. He inherited his father’s merchant business in Edinburgh and turned it into John Crabbie & Co. Purchasing a porter brewery in Leith amidst the pirates and smugglers just a stone’s throw from what is now The Whisky Society he began utilising the imports from the docks to make gin fruit-based cordials and of course the world famous Crabbie’s Ginger Wine. Crabbie then began procuring single malts from the finest distilleries producing his own at the likes of Balmenach and Benrinnes maturing barrels of Lagavulin Talisker and Laphroaig and then alongside Andrew Usher and William Sanderson he set up the iconic North British Distillery. Now reborn his company has launched two limited edition single malts and has announced plans to build a new distillery in Leith – we have our fingers crossed for a relaunch of the much-loved Bailie Nicol Jarvie.
