The Bourbon industry in Kentucky was started in the 1800s by Irish immigrants. So in honour of their Irish roots the renowned whiskey maker Kentucky Owl have created a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey blended through ‘Irish eyes’.
Kentucky Owl’s master blender John Rhea has partnered with Louise McGuane the founder of J.J. Corry Irish Whiskey. Together they have blind-tasted countless barrels of Kentucky Owl picking out the ones with the rich caramel vanilla spice and sweet fruit notes normally associated with Irish whiskey. These were then blended to create a small-batch Bourbon with a fruity-forward flavour profile more reminiscent of something created on the Emerald Isle. They named it the St. Patrick’s Edition and bottled it at a punchy 50% ABV. Connecting cultures this Kentucky Owl displays delicious flavours of crème caramel butterscotch cinnamon buns and juicy fruit. Unmistakably American but with echoes of Ireland.
Kentucky Owl was founded in 1879 by C.M. Dedman. Sadly the much-loved Bardstown distillery fell dormant during the Prohibition era. Luckily in 2014 a descendant revived “The Wise Man’s Bourbon” and the quality is simply sensational. So getting your hands on one of these collectable bottles should be ‘owl’ you’re thinking about right now.
