Kilkerran has released Batch 9 of their Heavily Peated Single Malt series with a robust bottling of 59.2 ABV. This blow-your-socks-off expression is created using 90% bourbon casks and 10% sherry casks and delivers hearty aromas of freshly baked shortbread, cream soda, banana loaf and coconut all with a smoky, heavily peated undercurrent running through. The creamy, vanilla notes develop on the palate with tones of buttered digestive biscuits and custard creams leading to a strong peated finish with intriguing hints of gooseberries rounding off this bracing dram. This small batch release comes without chill filter or added colour and ensures a delightful introduction to Campbeltown’s smokier side.
Glengyle Whisky Distillery was opened in 2004 and is one of the newest distilleries in Scotland. However, the buildings of the distillery and the site on which it sits were part of Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery which was founded in 1872, by William Mitchell, and ran until 1925. The buildings continued to be used right up until the modern day and remain some of the best-preserved buildings of all the former Campbeltown distilleries.
In November 2000, the buildings were bought by Mitchell’s Glengyle Limited, a new company, headed by Mr Hedley Wright, chairman of J&A Mitchell and Co Ltd, and great-great nephew of William Mitchell, original founder of Glengyle. Due to the Glengyle name already being used for a blended Highland malt, Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd could not purchase the rights and wanting to avoid any possible confusion between their newest single malts and the pre-existing blended Highland malts they decided on a new name. Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ which is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran has his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands.
