“If the Kistler Winery could be magically transported to the middle of Burgundy’s Cote d’Or it would quickly gain a reputation as glorious as any producer of Burgundy grand crus.” – Robert Parker

With an enormous cult following Kistler is one of California’s leading producers of Burgundy-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their vineyards stretch up the Sonoma Coast almost as far as San Francisco and their wines are big and dramatic but with real elegance. The wines are mostly sold via their mailing list making getting hold of them exceedingly difficult. Kistler Noisetiers gets its name because the plots used (Vine Hill Vineyard Dutton Ranch and Trenton Roadhouse) tend to result in lots of hazelnut flavours which will appeal to fans of Meursault. It’s completely barrel-fermented using indigenous and cultured yeasts before being aged in 25% new French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered and unfined (making it vegan friendly) after around 11 months and a few more settling in tank.

The resulting wine is concentrated oak-driven and complex with great depth and a mouth-filling texture. Pronounced and toasty on the nose this world class Chardonnay displays opulent notes of hazelnut apricot butter vanilla marzipan and orange blossom. Rich concentrated and incredibly intense in the mouth it features indulgent and layered flavours of creamy butter baked green apple white stone fruit marzipan citrus peel grilled pineapple walnut yeasty rye bread caramel smoke and spice. Superbly balanced with firm acidity this wine will continue to evolve and improve over for many years to come. Although almost never submitted to the critics for their rating we think this is every bit as good as the single vineyard wines.
