In 2015 the International Wine & Spirit Competition launched their inaugural search for “The World’s Best Gin for Gin & Tonic”. The winner was Kyrö Gin. The following year this incredible gin won the gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition premium gin series. So if you want to make the best G&T in the world then you’re going to need a bottle of this.
Kyrö Gin (formerly known as Napue) was lovingly handcrafted at the Kyrö Distillery in Isokyrö Finland. Using rye grain spirit and botanicals including sea buckthorn cranberries and birch leaves this gin is as refreshing as the morning mist over a Finnish meadow. With notes of meadowsweet citrus caraway menthol violets toasted almonds and peppery juniper this spicy and herbal gin combines perfectly with classic tonic water. Simply add lots of ice a sprig of rosemary and a couple of frozen cranberries if you have them.
The idea for Kyrö was conceived in a sauna by a group of friends discussing their mutual love of rye whiskey. The Finns love rye so it made perfect sense to create a distillery that utilised something that features so prominently in the national cuisine. They set up shop in a repurposed dairy and to say the stills only began running in 2014 it’s incredible what they’ve achieved in such a short time. In 2020 they sold more hand sanitiser than gin for obvious reasons. But now this award-winning spirit is flying again.
