95 points “A more vibrant and fruitier expression of Ardanza this year with strawberries, mussels, warm spices and berries. Round and silky on the palate with lovely spices and a long, nicely saline finish. A nice touch of creaminess works really well here and further extends the finish.” - James Suckling

94 points “2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink… An updated classical Ardanza.” - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

92 points “Baked cherry, raspberry ganache and warm fig flavours are ripe and expressive, with a pleasing counterpoint and added detail from rich notes of loamy earth and leather, plus accents of bay leaf, vanilla and red liquorice. There's a supple generosity on the palate, trimmed nicely by fine-grained tannins and a tang of orange peel acidity.” - Wine Spectator

This is a very sophisticated bottle of Rioja Reserva from the La Rioja Alta vineyard. It’s crafted from Tempranillo (80%) picked from 30-year-old vines and Grenache (20%) grown at high altitude. Aged for around three years in American oak, the wines from the two grapes were combined to create an elegant blend of black fruit, earth, spice and balsamic complemented by cedar and vanilla. The dry and rich palate sits alongside juicy texture and fine, polished tannins to culminate in a bold and lingering finish. A timeless, vibrant wine with serious style and perfect for a Sunday roast.

Formed in 1890 by three families – the Ardanzas the Aranas and the Alberdis – La Rioja Alta sets the benchmark for the entire Rioja region. They're famed for their classic Spanish reds which are aged for an inordinately long time in American oak barrels lovingly made by their own cooper. This wonderfully traditional producer still carries out its racking (the process of moving wine between barrels to remove the sediment) by hand and candlelight the old-school way making them a go-to for all connoisseurs of Rioja.
