Lani Gewürztraminer is a rambunctious melange of violets Turkish delight lychees tropical fruit ginger lime zest and peach. This rich and oily white is the go-to match for Thai food but works equally well with spicy Indian Vietnamese Nepalese Indonesian and Malaysian dishes.
Alana McGettigan fell in love with the aromatic wines she encountered in northern Italy and France. She was there working alongside Matt Thomson a highly respected flying winemaker who not only makes wines in Europe but also heads up Blank Canvas in New Zealand – a winery fast gaining a cult following. Anybody working with Matt Thomson is somebody to watch.
Luckily for Alana her aunt and uncle had been growing small parcels of Gewürztraminer next to the Opawa River in Marlborough for several years. So she set about recreating the wines she was bowled over by in Europe in New Zealand. What she has created is probably one of the finest examples of this tricky grape outside of Alsace.
