Léopold Gourmel is a leading artisanal Cognac house founded by Olivier Blanc in 1972. Olivier's aim is to make 'intelligent' Cognacs that remain faithful to nature by avoiding the usual standardisation and blending of Cognacs (instead he makes his Cognacs from a single vintage) and rejecting the legal use of additives. His Cognacs are classed according to the length of time they age with 10 15 and 20 Carats reflecting the minimum of 10 15 or 20 years that the Cognacs have aged. Uniquely he also classes his Cognacs according to the dominant aromas: fruit floral or spice aromas. All of the Cognacs produced originate in vineyards located in the hilly Premier Cru area of Fins Bois with the oldest subsoils and best exposure to the sun without the use of chemicals or pesticides. In addition all of the releases are made from a single vintage aged of their fine lees to increase intensity and only lightly filtered. Quintessence represents the oldest and finest release from Léopold Gourmel and is a single vintage Cognac taken from 1971. Dark and amber in colour the complex and layered nose offers a wonderfully aromatic mixed bouquet of fruits flowers and spices as well as notes of chamomile and citronella. Powerful and rich on the palate this fine mature spirit is warm and mellow with an assortment of indulgent developed flavours which include caramel honey hazelnut orange peel and exotic spice. Sublimely long and persistent on the finish this highly collectible release is best savoured and enjoyed at the end of a special meal.
