Longrow has released their annual 21-year-old single malt expression from the Springbank Distillery and with its heavily sherried base, this appealing and sweet malt will have you stirring in your boots. The peated Campbeltown whisky is crafted with 65% sherry casks and 35% bourbon casks with natural colour and no chill filtration.
Breathe in the savoury introductory notes of this dram alongside hints of hazelnut and blackcurrant before being enticed into the syrupy sweet and delicate palate with intriguing tones of fizzy cola bottles and cigar box smoke. The characteristic Longrow finish delights with its reminiscence of pebble beaches, flint and seaweed leaving you feeling fulfilled and keen to delve back in for more.
Once home to some thirty distilleries, Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However, most of them have long since gone out of business and now only a handful remain. The most famous is Springbank who produces the peated Longrow and also the triple-distilled and completely unpeated Hazelburn. Established in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell, Springbank is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. In fact, it’s the oldest independent family-owned distillery in Scotland. This family are also the force behind the Glengyle distillery where Kilkerran is made. So really, without that first illicit still set up by Archibald Mitchell and the spirit kept alive by his ancestors, there would probably be no whisky from Campbeltown and Scotch would be all the poorer for it.
Longrow was first distilled in 1973 and is a result of an experiment carried out by the Chairman of Springbank, who set out to prove that an Islay single malt could be produced on the mainland. Springbank continues to craft this heavily peated, smoky whisky and it can be found in four bottlings – Peated, Red, 18 Year Old and 21 Year Old.
