93 points “The complexity of upbringing (a 15-month ageing in a combination of sandstone vats stainless steel and oak barrels) is repaid by the challenges of a full appreciation. The first impression is of lime verbena chalk and spring flowers; intimation of Giacometti lean rather than Rubens fleshy. The palate challenges this presumption and impresses with its texture mealy honeyed notes sitting well with orchard fruit freshness spice from the oak equally satisfying the finish firm and measured with hints of salinity sounding the final fanfare.” – Decanter

In 2021 Louis Roederer launched a pair of still wines in honour of Camille Orly-Roederer who ran the great house between 1932 and 1975.

This is Louis Roederer as you’ve never tasted it before. Hommage à Camille Volibarts Chardonnay is a single vineyard white wine from a lieu-dit in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. This historical site is just 0.55 hectares in size so as you can imagine the production is tiny. In fact only 2 880 bottles were made in total and very few of those remain.

A third of the grapes for this Coteaux Champenois Blanc received skin contact maceration and it was matured on the lees in sandstone stainless steel and French oak for 15 months. For a still wine it feels very Champagne-like. The warm 2018 vintage has created lots of crisp crunchy and ripe fruit which mingles with chalk white flowers delicate oak toasted almonds white truffle gingerbread and a salty sea breeze. It manages to be both rounded and energetic all at once. It really is quite exceptional.

Founded in 1776 and famed for being the producer of Cristal Louis Roederer is one of the last major Champagne houses to still be independently family-run. It falls under the stewardship of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Domaines Ott Champagne Deutz Ramos Pinto Port Merry Edwards and Diamond Creek in the USA Maison Delas in the Rhône and Bordeaux’s iconic Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
