2013 was a turbulent year in Champagne but once again Louis Roederer’s Cristal proves that great winemakers can create masterpieces even in challenging vintages…

  • 99 points “A candidate for wine-of-the-vintage honours in Champagne… This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region’s tête de cuvée bottlings and it will be worth an effort to acquire.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
  • 98 points “The 2013 Cristal Rosé is searingly intense right out of the glass… Cristal Rosé has one of the best track records for aging in Champagne. I suspect the 2013 will join the ranks of the epic vintages.” – Antonio Galloni Vinous
  • 98 points “Aromas of strawberry iron orange peel and brioche follow through to a full body with gorgeous fruit and sweet tannins that layer the wine. Strawberry-patisserie undertones. Rather juicy and chewy with very round fine tannins. Savoury flavourful and lightly spicy.” – James Suckling

A seminal Champagne whatever the vintage. However this is truly something special as the reviews and scores above demonstrate. On top of which demand has gone through the roof since Cristal began to be created using entirely organic and biodynamic fruit. World-renowned Champagne critic Richard Juhlin says of Cristal: “Every vintage is stunning. Buy all the Roederer wines you come across.” None more so than this very special vintage.

Established in 1776 Louis Roederer is one of the few remaining independent family-owned Champagne houses. By 1876 the House had achieved such a reputation for quality that the second Louis Roederer was asked by Tsar Alexander II to create a new Champagne Cristal for the exclusive use of the Russian Tsars. The Rosé was first launched almost 200 years later in 1974 and has been adored ever since. Made from Louis Roederer’s finest biodynamic Grand Cru plots in Aÿ Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger it’s a blend of approximately 55% Pinot Noir (all from Aÿ) and 45% Chardonnay (2013 was definitely a Chardonnay year). It has spent seven years on the lees and additional months resting in the bottle and it displays its awesome pedigree a stunning nutty salinity reminiscent of Marcona almonds but also zesty pink grapefruit crunchy orchard fruit Rainier cherries caramelised apple tart toasted rye bread spiced with caraway seeds fresh baguette white peach blood orange mint chalky minerality redcurrant tangerine peel wild strawberry croissant blossom and a gentle smokiness. It’s a wonderfully muscular food wine but we love to drink this on its own to give it our full undivided attention.
