The Late Release series from Louis Roederer highlights outstanding vintages with strong personalities. According to Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon the house’s Cellar Master and Executive Vice President who orchestrated these exquisite expressions “the real sculptor of wine is time.” So they have been stored deep in the cellars for twenty years or more allowing their character to develop even further. In Lécaillon’s words “Reaching the peak of maturity yet still as fresh as ever these original disgorgement Champagnes illustrate their exceptional cellaring potential and incredible gastronomic dimension.”

The majority of the grapes come from vines on the peak of La Montagne de Reims. Sitting at 288 metres above sea level it’s one of the highest hillsides in Verzy. This height and the neighbouring forests create a unique terroir. It’s also a historically significant site because the Montagne vineyard contains the first vines purchased by Louis Roederer back in 1850.

The Late Release Vignoble de la Montagne Vintage Champagne 1995 is a blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay. 7% was aged in oak and the wine was disgorged in 2001. But it remained in the dark stillness underground maturing and evolving until its release in 2022.

Pour a glass and the wine seems to sparkle like gold and diamonds. The nose is immensely complex weaving together intricate notes of smoke baguette seashore cedar wood summer truffle caramel roasted vegetables and something reminiscent of Islay whisky. On the palate those umami and iodine flavours continue mingling with a rich creaminess and sweet brioche. The finish is electric like a sea breeze whipping your breath away. Consider opening this magnum with seared langoustines rich pâte XO sauce or dishes made with wild mushrooms.

Founded in 1776 and famed for being the producers of Cristal Louis Roederer is one of the last major Champagne houses to still be independently family-run. It falls under the stewardship of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Domaines Ott Champagne Deutz Ramos Pinto Port Merry Edwards and Diamond Creek in the USA Maison Delas in the Rhône and Bordeaux’s iconic Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
