This is a cider whose story starts way back in 1852. That was the year that the family of Xavier d’Audiffret Pasquier (one of Maison Sassy’s founders) started producing cider and calvados in Normandy. It was also the year that the lagares – the granite troughs used to crush grapes by foot – at Churchill's Port House were created in the Douro Valley around 600 miles away. To celebrate their 170 years of history these prestigious producers collaborated on what is possibly the finest cider we’ve ever tasted.
The limited-edition Sassy x Churchill’s Normandy Cider has been aged in white Port barrels. This layers dried fruit (apricot golden raisins candied pineapple) delicate spices and biscotti over the extra-dry farmhouse style of Sassy’s delightfully rustic cider. Serve and share this 100% natural creation like you would a fine wine and maybe consider pairing it with charcuterie cheese bacalhau caldo verde or tapas.
Sassy by name and sassy by nature; this handcrafted cider certainly lives up to its moniker. It has been lovingly created by a pair of young Frenchmen – childhood friends Xavier d’Audiffret Pasquier and Pierre-Emmanuel Racine-Jourden – who were keen to revolutionise what is not only their favourite beverage but also Normandy’s most famous export. Employing the expertise of a cellar master with more than 30 years’ experience they have succeeded in giving ‘cidre’ a very modern twist.
