Giving oaky Burgundy a run for its money, this nine-month-barrel-aged Chardonnay is bursting with apricot, peach, pear, lemon zest and floral notes with hints of toasted almonds. The palate is well structured and linear but retains a stone fruit focus with balanced and crisp acidity leading into a fresh and vivacious finish with clean citrus fruit and stony minerality. Winemaker Wim Truter has stepped into Chris Williams’s experienced shoes with aplomb, creating a gorgeous Chardonnay that will please fans and critics alike. It will benefit from decanting and can be served alongside pan-fried fish topped with a knob of butter, roast turkey and all the trimmings, creamy sauces or not-so-spicy coconut-based curries.
The Myburgh family has been making wine at Meerlust Estate for eight generations stretching back to 1756 – to think, that some people call this the New World! Drive up the long, palm tree-lined driveway and you’ll discover the iconic white manor house on top of a granite outcrop, 5km from False Bay.
