This was the Mezcal that put Mezcales de Leyenda on our radar and from first sip we knew we just had to have it.

To celebrate the utter gorgeousness of this Mezcal we’ve combined it with a bottle of Tajín Clásico – a seasoning made from chillies sea salt and dehydrated lime that’s perfect for adding a spicy rim to a Mezcal-based Margarita or for creating an accompanying Sangrita.

Displaying an abundance of tropical fruit and the muskiness of papaya and cooked agave there’s also a gentle smokiness Szechuan peppercorn Werther’s Original and a divinely filthy note of salty Parmesan. Sip neat alongside Guerrero’s traditional foods like slow roasted pork chapulines and pozole or simply popcorn or tortillas and pineapple salsa. We also love a shot of it shaken with ice two shots of a fruity Vermouth (maybe Belsazar Summer Riesling) one shot of lime juice and one of agave nectar poured over ice and garnished with a slice of grapefruit or dehydrated pineapple.

Mezcales de Leyenda’s Guerrero as the name suggests is a Mezcal Blanco from Guerrero – a mountainous and rugged state on Mexico’s south coast. It was made by a fourth generation Mezcalero called Don Oscar Obregón using the wild agave Cupreata (also known as Paplote or Ancho). This spiky agave can take up to ten years to mature beneath the trees where it grows and you need more than ten of those plants to make a single bottle of Mezcal; that’s before you even start the process of roasting in a lava rock pit crushing slow fermenting with natural yeast and double distilling in a copper alembic.

We're proud to be one of the first to offer Mezcales de Leyenda in the UK. Not only is this an earth-shatteringly awesome range of handcrafted Mezcals but this is a company committed to social and environmental responsibility. As well as supporting some of Mexico’s most marginalised communities and working with institutions who protect the Mexican countryside they’re fair trade ensuring reasonable wages for their workers. Where they use wild agave they only select ones deemed sustainable by SEMARNAT (the Mexican Department of Forestry) and where they use farmed agave they only work with growers who replace at least one plant for every one they harvest. Even the bottles are made from recycled glass and paper before being stoppered with a certified natural cork. In 2005 Mezcales de Leyenda opened the very first bar in Mexico City dedicated exclusively to artisanal Mezcal this is a producer at the very cutting edge of this category.
