Montanya Exclusiva Rum is the connoisseur’s sipper of choice. It was matured for two and half years in American white oak barrels that previously held Laws Colorado Whiskey followed by a further six months in French oak barrels used to age Cabernet Sauvignon and fortified wine at Sutcliffe Vineyards also in Colorado. This imparts a tannic wine-like quality that’s rare in aged rums and that earned it a Gold Medal at the Women’s Wine and Spirits Awards. Just before bottling the tiniest touch of Colorado honey is added (around 0.04% per bottle so don’t expect any discernible sweetness) this just enhances the natural flavours of summery red berries Tawny Port vanilla cinnamon crème brûlée golden syrup and a combination of green bell pepper oak spice and blackberries that reminds us of drinking Cabernet Franc. Truly unique sipped neat. Alternatively we recommend swapping the whiskey out of a Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Just be warned it’s so good you might never go back.
Karen Hoskins fell in love with rum while on holiday in Goa India. Inspired by rums made in the high mountains of Guatemala she decided to make her own and set up Montanya Distillers in the impossibly picturesque Crested Butte Colorado. This Rocky Mountain rum company is B-Corp Certified which means they are all-round good eggs who are totally on it when it comes to the environment sustainability their people their supply chain and giving back to the community. They are leading a global movement to put people and the planet before profit.
Their small-batch artisanal rums are made at high altitude using love; a barrel-load of integrity; alembic copper pot stills over open flames; Louisiana-grown farm-sourced sugar cane (they are great friends with the farmers); and pure Colorado mountain spring water drawn from an snowmelt-fed aquifer beneath the distillery. Don’t expect the intense tropical fruit and full-on wood found in their tropical counterparts these are quite unique cold-climate rums with more of a spice and kernel character. Perfect after a day in the mountains.
