The Newfound Benchland Carignane (aka Carignan and Cariñena) is a red with bags of character. The lightly floral notes juicy plum and red cherry will appeal to Pinot Noir fans there’s density and tar to keep Nebbiolo lovers happy and there’s a foraged blackberry and tea leaf wildness for the Natural Wine heads out there. It comes from vines grown in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley many of which are 75+ years old and the wine is matured in a combination of Austrian and French barrels and one clay amphora. This bottle is an old vine Carignan adventure waiting for your corkscrew.
Newfound Wines was set up by Audra Chapman and Matt Naumann a pair of industry veterans who were keen to focus on nature-led farming. They bought a 40-acre ranch in California’s Sierra Foothills and began building a family legacy. They believe that farming is not just a connection to the land but to the universe maybe taking more of a lead from indigenous people than the more commercialised side of the wine industry. Their winemaking process leans into instinct experience and listening to the wine rather than the hard science and refinement adopted by many. The grapes are often foot trodden and the wines which are bottle unfined and unfiltered are often labelled as the broader California AVA allowing them more flexibility and to be able to offer more affordable wines that overdeliver on their price. The vineyards that they tend are a ramshackle glorious and organic bunch one was planted after Prohibition and is owned by the city of Ukiah one is super-steep and owned by the musician Boz Scaggs one has been converted to no-till farming and another is packed with old Carignan vines that would make the “Old World” producers of France and Spain quite jealous.
