This new flavour is Niederegger’s ‘Marzipan Bread of the Year 2021’. We love that they call this format a loaf suggesting that it’s something fresh and light straight from the bakery when in reality it’s a robust brick of marzipan that would definitely smash a window if hurled with sufficient force. (Obviously we don’t condone such behaviour.) It does beg the question though can you then have it for breakfast? The answer is yes especially during the festive season.
This chunky ingot of marzipan is laced with fruity cherry and creamy white chocolate pieces then wrapped in a shell of crunchy dark chocolate. Getting a bit geeky one of the major compounds that make cherries taste the way they do is benzaldehyde which is an almond-like flavour. So marzipan and cherry are a match made in heaven especially when combined with the decadence of two different types of chocolate.
