Artist Regina Pessoa was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and created three super-cute bottles; the Rabbit Dry White Port and also a Douro duo in honour of Tweedledum and Tweedledee called Ruby Dum and Tawny Dee.
This cute half bottle is Ruby Dum – a blend of Touriga Nacional Touriga Franca Tinto Cão Tinta Francisca Tinta Amarela Sousão Tinta Roriz and others from low-yielding vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro Valley. Aged in large wooden vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Gaia it was bottled with an average age of three years maintaining its strong fruit character. Displaying notes of red cherries and ripe plums alongside a breezy freshness this is a youthful modern Port that’s ranks very high on the drinkability scale. And that half bottle is the perfect size for opening up with chocolate desserts and impromptu cheeseboards or for bringing together quarrelling siblings.
Dirk Niepoort is winemaking royalty. His family have been making Port since 1842. The family business is a small but high-quality Port shipper long renowned for their excellent Ports but also now making waves with their table wines too. The Ports are all traditionally made but always of excellent quality – often still foot trodden in stone troughs called lagares and aged extensively before release.
