Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…
Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Craig Wilson the 2021 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries as told by Scottish actors Siobhan Redmond and Lorne MacFadyen and the digital artist Ken Taylor. Fans of Game of Thrones and the accompanying whiskies will find much to love here.
Apart from the classic 14 Year Old and the occasional Distillers Edition we seldom see new releases from this distillery which makes the Oban 12 Year Old Special Release 2021 one of the most exhilarating in this year’s line-up. Matured in older American oak casks that have been freshly charred it’s a spicy Oban bristling with salt and pepper. There’s Sichuan peppercorn pomander salted caramel vanilla ice cream spiced apple crumble fruitcake lemon zest seaweed iodine and smoky char. That classic Oban character of orange spice and the suggestion of something maritime feels like Christmas in a small fishing village.
Representing one of Scotland’s smallest but most well-known and loved distilleries Oban is situated on the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands. Its mild temperate climate warmed by the Gulf Stream sets it apart in a region known for its rugged natural beauty. The proximity to the coast lends Oban some of that salted character for which the Islands are renowned. The whisky itself owes its rich and rewarding Highland character to its very long fermentation process. The tiny lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills that make Oban’s Scotch are among the tiniest in Scotland and the liquor they distil is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs outside among the rooftops exposed to the salted sea air bringing a distinct depth of flavour said to go very well with salted caramel.
