This limited-edition expression from Old Pulteney was finished in casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes – a rare French aperitif made from fresh or unfermented grape juice that has been fortified with Cognac eau-de-vie and matured in barrels.

Released as part of the Coastal series, it began its voyage in ex-Bourbon casks. It was then transferred to the French oak barrels from the oceanic Charente region, just to the north of Bordeaux. What emerges from those casks is a sweeter and lighter take on the classic Old Pulteney vibe. Pour a dram to discover apricot jam, honey, vanilla, candied orange peel, golden raisins, white balsamic, caramelised hazelnuts, woody spices, white pepper and a pinch of sea salt. A spectacular Scotch for sipping neat on summer evenings or for mixing into a refreshing highball.

Once famed for its barrels of herring, Wick is now renowned for its casks of award-winning single malt. And there’s no whisky on the planet quite like the “Manzanilla of the North”. The most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, Old Pulteney is lashed by the salty sea and that maritime influence penetrates deep into the whisky produced there. Their single malt is so good and so distinctive that King Charles has his very own cask – just don’t tell Laphroaig or Ballindalloch.
