The wines of Bodegas Pago de Carraovejas are famous for their quality but infamous for their very limited production. This makes them virtually impossible to come by especially the incredible El Anejón with a decade under its belt.

2010 was “exceptional for Ribera del Duero” according to Jancis Robinson making this vintage even more desirable. Awarded 96+ points by Jeb Dunnuck 96 points by Guia Peñin and 94 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Pago de Carraovejas’ El Anejón 2010 is a blend of 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot all harvested by hand from terraces 900m high. Fermented with native yeasts from the estate (to maintain the exceptional terroir) in small French oak barrels it was matured in a mix of French and American oak for 12 months before being clarified with egg white and bottled in May 2012. Aged in the bottle for three more years before release the majority of this vintage has long since been snapped up by collectors over the last five years. But we’ve managed to secure a handful of bottles. Full-bodied powerful and immensely aromatic yet extremely complex and elegant El Anejón 2010 flows like a silken wave of red fruit creamy cherry yoghurt toast tonka bean and spices but it’s also developing notes of incense tobacco Mediterranean herbs chocolate prune barbequed meat and balsamic. As you’ll discover when you read on and discover the history of this winery this wine is a go-to for pork-based dishes. But don’t be fooled by its age this intriguing red has many years ahead of it. So maybe don’t put that pig in the oven just yet.

In the 1970s an energetic young man from Segovia called José María Ruiz represented Spain at the first Sommelier World Challenge. At the time Spain didn’t really recognise this profession but when he finished fifth out of the contestants from more than sixty countries it ignited a dream in José María Ruiz. That dream was to raise his own piglets and make his own wine to accompany the local delicacy “Cochinillo” (roasted suckling pig). His restaurant Restaurante José Maria opened in 1982 followed by his winery in 1987. Pago de Carraovejas is located in the historical heart of Ribera del Duero Peñafiel. At the time Ribera del Duero was largely unknown as a wine region this was before the meteoric rise of Pingus and the points from Robert Parker began to be sprayed around like confetti. Pago de Carraovejas were trend setters when Ribera del Duero was coming up and for us they are still one of the benchmark producers in the region.
