94 points “Clearly defining what many customers expect from a conventional Australian Shiraz this has sunny fresh and vibrant fruit aromas and flavours swirling in the glass: big blackberry in an embrace with satsuma plum. Generous in body without being flabby the disciplined oak and tannin regime pulls the belly taut to ensure the palate finishes clean and lean. Say yes to another glass – especially as it offers very good value.” – Decanter Magazine

There’s nothing quite as a warming as juicy Australian Shiraz at its finest. Robust and generous Bin 28 was inspired by the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley that Penfolds bought back in 1945. Now it’s made using grapes from Barossa Valley McLaren Vale Padthaway and Wrattonbully. 2019 saw yields down across all regions but the quality was exceptional. This means that there will be high demand but fleeting availability.

It reminds us of Chambord mixed with those black gummy sweets from your childhood that were shaped like little jellies. Then it evolves into something more umami reminiscent of a spicy Asian mushroom dish combined with blackberries fig custard praline cola juniper dark chocolate and toasted vanilla pod. Oh what a treat especially if served with a slow-cooked chilli or Mexican mole.

Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
