97 points, “Grilled bread with flowers, pears and apples. Lots of perfumes. Lavender and some herbs and nutmeg. The palate is tight and solid with fine phenolics and a long, intense finish. Pure and extremely linear and lively. Sophisticated and thought-provoking.” – James Suckling

With its wildly variable conditions, 2005 was a tricky year in Champagne, but in Cuvée Louise, Pommery created one of the wines of the vintage.

Pommery kept everybody on tenterhooks, as this was one of the last of the deluxe cuvées to be released. But as they say, good things come to those who wait. Cuvée Louise 2005 is a blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir, but that only tells half the story, because the grapes come from the Grands Crus of Avize, Cramant and Aÿ. With that incredible provenance, the result is a generous and compelling wine with notes of crème brulee, peach, ripe citrus, spiced gingerbread, honey, walnut, quince, buttery hazelnut, brioche and white flowers. A laser-like acidity keeps all that richness and complexity zipped up tight. A fitting wine named in honour of the inventor of this much-loved Brut style.

Originally established as a wool trading company called Pommery & Greno in 1858, this business took a dramatic change of direction when its founder Alexandre Louis Pommery died, and his widow Louise took over. Now, Pommery is one of the biggest names in Champagne, and it deserves a special place in the region’s history as Madame Pommery created the first Brut Champagne in 1874. This ground-breaking wine changed the prevailing preference for sweeter Champagne and would go on to become the world’s most popular style. The avant-garde Champagne house, with its turrets, towers, crenelations, red bricks and blue façade, is every bit as bright and striking as the wines produced within its walls. Madame Pommery described her refined wines with two words: joy and lightness. So, when you want to spread a little joie de vivre, reach for a bottle of Pommery Champagne.
