The experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the 2009 vintage in Champagne as one of “outstanding” quality. So, any Champagne from this stunning year is an intriguing prospect.

Pommery weren’t going to miss out on a vintage that they themselves described as a “gift from the gods”. Their Grand Cru Royal 2009 is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that has been aged on the lees for at least nine years and an extra six months following disgorgement. Combine the provenance, the quality of the vintage, the extended ageing and Pommery’s sterling reputation, and the price of this wine starts to feel ludicrously low.

Expect a gloriously generous Champagne with powerful vitality and complex flavours of buttered toast, juicy orange, truffle, poached pear, strawberry sorbet, acacia honey, Mirabelle plum, Granny Smith apple, dried fig, frangipane, blueberry and Chantilly cream. Maturity and freshness; it’s a winning combo.

Originally established as a wool trading company called Pommery & Greno in 1858, this business took a dramatic change of direction when its founder Alexandre Louis Pommery died, and his widow Louise took over. Now, Pommery is one of the biggest names in Champagne, and it deserves a special place in the region’s history as Madame Pommery created the first Brut Champagne in 1874. This ground-breaking wine changed the prevailing preference for sweeter Champagne and would go on to become the world’s most popular style. The avant-garde Champagne house, with its turrets, towers, crenelations, red bricks and blue façade, is every bit as bright and striking as the wines produced within its walls. Madame Pommery described her refined wines with two words: joy and lightness. So, when you want to spread a little joie de vivre, reach for a bottle of Pommery Champagne.
