Populis make natural wine for the people by sourcing grapes from organic old vines all over Northern California. Inspired by Wabi-sabi – the Japanese idea of finding the beauty in the imperfect impermanent and incomplete – this wine is honest humble and downright delicious.
This vegan-friendly low-sulphur red is made from a blend of Carignan Syrah and Zinfandel harvested in Mendocino County and the Sierra Foothills. Fermented using indigenous yeast – not the soulless stuff from a packet – the wine is matured in old oak barrels and bottled straight from them. This is not a classic Californian heavyweight it’s light crunchy pure and super fresh. It reminds us of the wine you drink on holiday in Italy or Southern France. Pull the cork imagine sunnier climes and pair with rustic dishes and barbeques.
Diego Roig Sam Baron and Shaunt Oungoulian started by making wines in Shaunt’s parent’s basement. They release their young wines under the Populis label and older wines under Les Lunes. This team has experience from studying at UC Davis and making wines in New Zealand France and Italy. On top of which urban winery fans will be interested to know that a couple of them also worked at Broc Cellars in Berkeley California.
