96 points “An exceptional classic with a unique twist.” – The International Wine & Spirit Competition 2020*

Procera is a proudly African craft gin created using the finest botanicals for all corners of the continent. Distilled in Nairobi Kenya at 1638 metres above sea level it’s the world’s first gin to use Juniperus Procera – the only indigenous species of juniper anywhere in the southern hemisphere. The berries are picked by hand in the highland forest of Kijabe and they give Procera Gin a nuttiness and earthiness unlike anything you will have experienced before. ‘Procera’ means tall and these juniper trees are giants each one needing to be climbed to harvest the rare berries. The pickers know when the berries are sweet and ripe because the local baboon family start devouring them they just have to get there first.

The African juniper is combined with nine other carefully curated botanicals grown across the continent from Morocco in the northwest to the Indian Ocean islands in the southeast. There’s cardamom and mace from Zanzibar; Madagascan pink peppercorns; Swahili limes and pixie oranges from Kenya; Moroccan coriander and orris root; musky selim pepper from Sierra Leone; and finally Somali acacia honey which helps to fix the citrusy crispness in the gin.

Master Distiller Roger Jorgensen has been striving his whole career to make the perfect Martini gin and we think he’s cracked it with Procera. Nutty earthy and woody this fabulous intense gin buzzes like a livewire sending out shocks of pink peppercorn caraway juniper incense toasted almond marzipan frozen grapes bitter chocolate and zingy citrus. The texture is so rich it almost makes all gins that came before it seem watery in comparison. And it becomes even richer if you add a little pinch of the African salt that comes with every bottle. This salt mix is made at the distillery and includes matching botanicals in the style of the gin itself helping to take your experience to the next level. Then there’s that bottle a striking objet d’art worthy of housing such an exquisite gin. Handblown by the team at Kitengela Hot Glass and finished with a palm wood stopper a leather grip and no label; this is one bottle that certainly won’t be going in the recycling after it’s done. Maisha marefu! (That’s cheers in Swahili.)

* It’s worth noting that this score equalled that of No.3 London Dry Gin in this competition a gin that has previously been named “World’s Best Gin” by the International Spirits Challenge an astonishing four times.
