In 1995 Bodegas Roda discovered a plot of grapes that tasted very different to those around them. Remarkably rich ripe and full; these grapes were something special. So they bottled them by themselves with less oak (eight months in French barrels) to allow them to sing at full voice. The result is unique modern and brash. They call it Cirsion.
It became an experiment to create the best possible Tempranillo. Only made in top vintages this flagship wine receives so little oak ageing that it doesn’t qualify to even be a Crianza. With its tobacco dark berry plum crumble ripe raspberry autumn forest and fresh herb style and a little Graciano in the mix the 2016 vintage is getting rave reviews from the critics. It also comes in wooden case making it a perfect gift for a Spanish wine aficionado.
Everything Bodegas Roda produce is awesome their Riojas appeal to a younger generation who are less interested in drinking something with the fusty gravitas of a stately home library and instead seek more vim and vigour. Founded in the late-80s Roda is a new breed of Rioja producer one that has carried out meticulous scientific research to find the finest plots of old vines. What’s lovely to see from this forward-thinking producer is their increased use of Grenache and Graciano to add freshness to their wines.
