There are very few privately produced premium rums from Colombia so anything from La Hechicera is a rare treat. Serie Experimental No.1 is a true one-of-a-kind and is unlikely to ever be repeated. Twelve years into his family’s rum venture Miguel Riascos Senior decided to fill sixteen rum barrels with his favourite wine Muscat. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it La Hechicera proved a massive success and the busy family clean forgot about these barrels. Twelve years later while doing an inventory the son Miguel Riascos Junior found the barrels filled with nutty leathery and prune-flavoured wine. He emptied them and filled them with rum aged between 12 and 21 years of age. And this is the result a limited-edition La Hechicera finished in Muscat casks.
With no additives or sugar the smoothness of La Hechicera comes purely from the noble wood of the barrels it has been aged and finished in. Think leather Madeira vanilla-laced oak barbequed pineapple flambéed banana pecan pie juicy raisins prunes soaked in Armagnac marzipan coated in dark chocolate ancho chilli and sweet butterscotch. Dark rich and woody; this will keep you warm in the cooler months. And with only 7 200 bottles of this highly collectable rum released worldwide it’s sure to be in high demand especially considering its beautiful blue wax seal rainforest motif and hand-numbered bottle.
La Hechicera was created by the Riascos family in Barranquilla wedged between the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea in the most biodiverse nation on the planet. Their Maestro Ronero Giraldo Mituoka Kagana is the son of a Japanese immigrant who started his career cutting sugar cane for the Cuban revolution and is clearly a master of his art.
