Sean Thackrey was a genius a polymath and an iconic winemaker. Unique self-taught and driven by intuition he was the complete antithesis of big brand wine. For forty years he used unusual techniques including some ancient practices from all over the world to create some of California’s most exciting wines. Sadly he passed away on 30 May 2022 at the age of 79 years old. His wines were hard to procure while he was alive so it seems that wines like this may become even more difficult to source in the future.
To quote the back label “The object of Pleiades Old Vines is to be delicious delight the jaded irritate the Wine Police and go well with anything red wine goes well with.” And as Jancis Robinson MW has previously noted this red is: “Pure pleasure… No rough edges and utterly warming and comforting.”
Although Sean Thackrey would never say exactly what goes into this wine it’s rumoured to be a blend of Pinot Noir Sangiovese Viognier Mourvèdre and Syrah but there could also be Zinfandel Petite Sirah Carignan Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon in the mix. Who knows?
This is the 28th edition of this multi-vintage and multi-vineyard red and it displays brisk red fruit such as pomegranate and raspberry alongside perfumed black fruit orange zest baking spices gingerbread and notes of smoked meat. Devilishly intriguing it has a rustic almost Italian feel to it while remaining resolutely Californian and completely original. If you’re still not convinced to give this wine from Bolinas a try we’ll leave you with a quote from the world’s most famous wine critic:
“As I have stated so many times before Sean Thackrey’s limited production gems are among the most original expressions of winemaking in California.” – Robert Parker
