Introducing the new second wine from Chile’s Seña. Only around 3,000 cases were made of the inaugural vintage of Rocas de Seña and when it was released via La Place de Bordeaux, it sold out almost immediately. Luckily, Harvey Nichols managed to secure a few bottles for anybody who might have missed out.

The name comes from the rocky soils of its home in the Aconcagua Valley and Rocas de Seña 2020 is a blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache and 8% Petit Verdot. This may be the second wine of Seña, but it isn’t simply a copy from young vines. Seña is a Bordeaux-like, Cabernet-dominated red with a sizeable quantity of Carmenère in the mix, which makes the Malbec-dominated Roca de Seña with those intriguing Rhône varietals a very different proposition. And its first outing seems to have really impressed the world’s leading critics…

96 points, “Elegant and extremely drinkable with complexity on top… The real deal.” – James Suckling

93 points, “Very much in the serious and elegant style of the Seña.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

93 points, “Juicy on the palate with refined, reactive tannins, it has a core of vibrant freshness that invigorates the mouthfeel and lends energy to the long finish.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

92 points, “This is well made and a sure-fire hit.” – Decanter

Expect blackcurrant, red cherry, blackberry, wild strawberry, mint chocolate, cigar, kalamata olive, truffle, herby roasted meat, orange peel, smoked spices and a long, creamy finish. Rumour has it that future vintages may not see the 22 months in French oak that this one did, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Seña – meaning ‘signal’ – and Rocas de Seña are made by Eduardo Chadwick Claro, Decanter’s Man of the Year 2018 and the president of Errázuriz. Before Seña’s first vintage in 1995, Chile didn’t have a reputation for fine wine. Seña changed that, becoming the country’s first truly iconic red. It was originally a joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, who joined forces to create the ultimate Chilean wine. In 2005, Eduardo Chadwick became the sole owner of Seña. The introduction of a second wine is sure to cause the quality of the Grand Vin to improve even further, while providing an earlier-drinking alternative that offers great value for money.

Seña originally shot to fame following a tasting in Berlin in 2004. This was a sort of Chilean tribute to the Judgement of Paris at which Seña and Viñedo Chadwick (Eduardo Chadwick’s other masterpiece) were tasted blind against the world’s best Cabernet blends, including Super Tuscans and First Growths from Bordeaux. The two Chileans of course came out on top, and their legendary status was cemented forever.
