One of the famous benchmarks of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon this wine from the Stags Leap District always impresses. Shafer’s One Point Five takes its name from the “generation and a half ” coined by John and Doug Shafer to describe their father-and-son partnership. It’s a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec predominantly from two Stags Leap District sites – Shafer’s hillside estate vineyard and the ‘Borderline’ vineyard a couple of miles from the winery. Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels it introduces itself with enticing notes of juicy blackberry crème de cassis blueberry spiced plum crumble clove tobacco wet gravel leather cherry liqueur chocolates bay leaf pencil shavings black tea cola and cedar. It's impossible to argue with the respected wine critic Jeb Dunnuck when he says “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is brilliant and up with the crème de la crème at the price point.” Complex and full of finesse this is one of those showstopper wines to open when you want the whole room to take notice.
In the 1970s John Shafer packed in his morning commute in Chicago for driving a TD-9 tractor around vineyards in Napa Valley. Some of the vineyards that the Shafers purchased were first planted in the 1880s so had quite the pedigree. This pioneering spirit was rewarded as Shafer has been called “one of the world’s greatest wineries” by Robert Parker. They get all their power from solar panels and have donated five acres of their land to the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County.
