Northern Ireland’s first award-winning craft distillery presents Ireland’s most awarded gin Shortcross Gin.
The historic 500-acre Rademon Estate can be found in County Down. Nestled in the centre is a tiny distillery founded by Fiona and David Boyd-Armstrong in 2012. This wife-and-husband team created the first gin to be distilled in Northern Ireland and it has set the benchmark for all Irish gin.
Their gin’s name comes from the distillery’s local village of Crossgar which in Gaelic or Irish means ‘Short Cross’. The recipe is a closely guarded secret but it’s equally inspired by Rademon Estate in particular its forests and gardens. So as well as classic botanicals like juniper coriander citrus peels and cassis it also includes fresh water drawn from the well on the estate foraged clover from the wild meadows elderflowers and elderberries to provide a floral note and fresh apples from the walled garden for a little sweetness.
Made in small batches with immense attention to detail Shortcross Gin is bottled by hand and dipped in wax to seal it. This is a classic juniper-led gin that ticks all the boxes. Spicy floral citrusy and fruity with a gorgeous oily texture not to mention verdant tropical and sweet vanilla notes. This shines in a Martini but is equally wonderful in a gin and tonic or a wide array of cocktails.
The Rademon Estate Distillery is also quietly making whiskey so keep an eye out for that on the horizon.
