Sipsmith’s Origin 1639 Gin is inspired by the first recipe to give birth to modern gin found in the 1639 standards manual of the Worshipful Company of Distillers of London, titled 'The Distiller of London'. Master Distiller Jared Brown, and drinks historian Ananstatia Miller have been studying gins 400-year-old history since 1995, and this slim volume gave them a great, but coded, mystery. The book contained 34 approved formulas and 16 variations which would need to be deciphered to get to the heart of the recipe, and Jared and Anastitia managed to crack the code.
One of these secret recipes produced a remarkably balanced spirit of juniper, citrus and spice, unlike any other gin they had made. This is the closest ancestor to London Dry Gin that has ever been discovered, and now can be yours to try. This changes the history of gin, meaning that gin can now trace it roots to Britain and not in Holland as has been believed for a very long time.
One of the key differences with this recipe is the inclusion of raspberries and strawberries in the gin, before being rested in oak for two weeks and then chill filtered. This means that the gin has an aroma of bright berries and juniper as well as soft spice and vanilla. On the palate, it’s juniper forward with berries, citrus, toffee and vanilla finishing with a smooth dry and spicy note.
