Prepare to be bowled over by this limited-edition Pinot Noir. A fine choice if you’ve gone for a duck.
“What people don’t know is that I have been dabbling in the wine industry for many years and I haven’t played professional cricket since 1993. So, I am no longer Ian Botham the cricketer, I am Ian Botham the winemaker.”
Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham OBE is one of the nation’s most iconic sporting superstars, his heroic feats on the cricket field only eclipsed by the millions he raised for charities like Blood Cancer UK while off it. Arguably the finest all-rounder England has ever produced, his career – both playing and commentating – took him jet setting all over the globe, taking in a few of the New World’s most famous wine regions along the way. Ducking out of those Test arenas, he was able to build lasting relationships with several winemakers and top-draw estates, which have proven useful in his latest venture. When asked to put this project in perspective, the outspoken sportsman said: “I’ll be honest with you, creating my own wine range is probably better than scoring a hundred at Lords.”
In 2020, Sir Ian became Lord Botham, when we was awarded a life peerage and a seat in the House of Lords. In celebration of this, he created a limited-edition Pinot Noir called The Peerage. Only 1,000 bottles were filled. Each one has been signed by the former-cricketer and comes presented in a wooden gift box. As a feared and scandalous maverick known for his aggressive batting, dynamic swing bowling and authoritative slip fielding, his wine was always going to be exciting. The Peerage is an expressive Pinot Noir from two vineyards in Queensbury and Lowburn, Central Otago. It was made by Maude Wines, a family-run operation near Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, that has also caught the attention of Australian wine expert, James Halliday. Expect to be smashed for six: blackcurrant, bramble, black cherry, plum crumble, spice and oak. Maybe a hint of leather on willow? Howzat?
