93 points, “The 2017 Siran has turned out beautifully. Dark and rich with tons of nuance, Siran is super expressive in 2017 in the mid-weight style of the vintage. Wild cherry, plum, dried flowers, mint, tobacco and smoke are all laced together in this pretty, inviting Margaux.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
92 points, “This is rather lovely, with excellent aromatics and fine tannins with a feeling of flex and precision. There is no question that the fruit has form and density, with focussed cassis and tobacco notes and some slate. This also lasts well on the palate. The fruit is at the fresher end of the scale, as is true across most wines in 2017, but it's clearly successful.” – Decanter
2017 was a challenging vintage, but Château Siran luckily avoided the frosts. Owned by Edouard Miailhe, the estate’s wines are made by Marjolaine DeFrance and Hubert de Boüard (the co-owner of Angélus in Saint-Émilion) consults, so there was never going to be any problem.
Château Siran is not just a great Bordeaux, but it’s also pub quiz heaven. It was once owned by Toulouse Lautrec and has a cellar built in the 1980s that is designed to withstand a nuclear explosion. Hailing from the south of the region, this is always a satisfying Margaux. A blend of mainly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a splash of Petit Verdot, aged in oak for a year before release. As ever, in 2017 it’s charmingly aromatic, displaying fleshy blackberry, cherry, plum crumble, crème de cassis, leather, tobacco, spices and something of an English country garden in bloom, replete with herb patch. This is a château on the rise, and this vintage should not be missed.
