SPOT WHISKEYS Green Spot Quails' Gate Pinot Noir Cask Finished Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

For this limited edition, Mitchell & Son have taken their classic Green Spot whiskey, initially matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, and aged it for a further 12 months in Pinot Noir wine casks from the famous Quails’ Gate Winery in the Okanagan Valley, Canada. Thought to be the first of its kind, the whiskey was made at Midleton Distillery before undergoing its unique maturation process in the hands of Mitchell & Son.
The Stewarts, who run Quails’ Gate, are a third-generation Okanagan farming family. However, their first vines were planted by their pioneering grandfather, Richard Stewart Senior (affectionately known as ‘Poppa Dick’), who was an immigrant from County Kildare in Ireland (and apparently a real fan of Connemara in County Galway). And that connection to the Emerald Isle is why their wine barrels were chosen for this special collaboration. Part of the Wine Geese Series, this single pot still, triple-distilled whiskey is a celebration of Irish heritage that makes a great gift for both whiskey and wine lovers alike.
The delicacy of the Irish whiskey marries beautifully with the freshness and finesse of the Canadian Pinot Noir. The barrels layer tangy red fruit – ripe cherry, fresh raspberry, dried cranberry and red cherry – over the baked apple, sweet pear, vanilla, barley, creamy marzipan, gingerbread, mixed peel, toasted oak and woody festive spices of the whiskey. The red wine influence creates a silky and mouthcoating feel, which almost reminds us of strawberries and cream. With a flavour profile like that, we’re going to be sipping this one all summer long.
Mitchell & Son Wine Merchants & Whiskey Bonders started off buying new make spirit from Jameson’s and ageing them in wine and fortified wine casks back in the 1800s. Maturing their whiskey beneath the streets of Dublin, they marked the barrels with a dab of paint to signify how long it needed to mature for – a blue spot of seven years, green for ten, yellow for twelve and red for fifteen – hence why they are now known as Spot Whiskeys.
