91 points “The 2018 Chardonnay Karia rolls effortlessly out of the glass with exuberant scents of honey-drizzled apricots fresh melon and mandarin peel with hints of lemon drops and marzipan. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of stone fruit and savoury layers delivering a lively backbone and a spicy kick to the finish.” – Wine Advocate
Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars put Napa Valley on the map making anything they produce highly sought-after. Karia (Kar-ee-ah) comes from the Greek word for graceful and graceful it is with its notes of green apple lemon curd almond peach pineapple pear buttery croissant and orange blossom. It comes from vineyards in the southern part of Napa Valley (Atlas Peak District Oak Knoll AVA Carneros and Coombsville) and oak is used in moderation. It loves a roast chicken Caesar salad poached salmon with butter lemon and new potatoes or simple creamy pasta in the sunshine.
Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar’s 1973 vintage shot them to fame in 1976 when it outperformed famous French First Growths such as Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion at a blind tasting by French wine experts organised by Stephen Spurrier – known as “The Judgement of Paris”. Founder Warren Winiarski sold the winery the Antinori Family – Tuscan winemaking royalty – in 2007 for a reported $185 million. The wines are often referred to as “an iron fist in a velvet glove” referring to the power and richness balanced by the soft smoothness of the finish.
