This stunning and highly collectable Medusa head bottle is filled with Sour Berry Rum – a marriage of tangy gooseberry sweet blackberry a splash of damson and the finest Caribbean white rum. Completely unique and original it’s a fruit rum unlike anything we’ve ever tasted before. Although fabulous served chilled over ice or long with tonic water or lemonade Stone Gaze Sour Berry Rum is also capable of taking stone-cold classic cocktails and turning them into the stuff of myth and legend.
Ask anyone about Medusa and you’ll likely be told about the horror of the venomous snakes she had in place of hair or her evil gaze that could turn men to stone. But that’s only part of the story. As we know history and literature tend to paint powerful women as terrifying and monstrous while airbrushing out the misdemeanours of men. And so although one of the most iconic women of ancient mythology Medusa remains completely misunderstood.
Medusa was one of three sisters. Her siblings Stheno and Euryale were immortal but she was not. So it seems like she may have started life at a bit of a disadvantage. Poseidon the trident-wielding god of the sea was a nasty piece of work. One of his victims was none other than Medusa who he assaulted on the floor of a temple to Athena the goddess of wisdom handicraft warfare and maybe posters? On discovering this desecration of her temple Athena took the not particularly wise or sisterly decision to punish Medusa not Poseidon turning her gaze murderous and her golden tresses into serpents thus creating the “hideous monster” we know Medusa as today. Athena then sent Perseus to hunt down and kill Medusa gifting him the polished shield that would allow him to look upon his quarry and guiding his sword for the final blow. So all-in-all Medusa was not a beast or a predator at all but a victim and another wronged woman preyed upon by the powerful. Stone Gaze is therefore a statuesque rum with real bite designed for those who like a spirit with true character and their history with a little less injustice in its telling.
