Rye whiskey that comes from the States or Canada right? Guess again. Many of North America’s top distilleries source their rye from Germany’s breadbasket Brandenburg. A small distillery in that region is now producing some incredible whiskey but most of it gets hoovered up by the bar scene in Berlin. Luckily Harvey Nichols has secured a small parcel of Stork Club Straight Rye Whiskey a spirit that is making quite a name for itself after picking up a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018.
Stork Club Straight Rye Whiskey is made from malted and unmalted German rye and is matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon casks and white wine barrels. Remarkably smooth considering its high ABV it’s a complex and fruity drop packed with toffee apples creamy milk chocolate praline rye bread slathered with marmalade pumpkin pie sweet vanilla mulled wine spices smoke butterscotch caramelised nuts grass pine meadows ginger ale and peppercorns. This is the next big thing in whiskey.
Although the producers claim that the name comes from all the leggy birds that nest in the region it must also be a reference to the New York nightclub that was frequented by the likes of the Kennedys the Roousevelts Grace Kelly Ernest Hemingway Elizabeth Taylor Wallis Simpson Marilyn Monroe Frank Sinatra and for a short while until he was banned Humphrey Bogart. This whiskey is certainly destined to rub shoulders with the rich and famous.
Three friends were driving to Brandenburg’s oldest distillery south of Berlin to buy a cask of whiskey and found themselves inspired by the rye fields that spread out in all directions as far as their eyes could see. When they got to the Spreewald Distillery the owners told them that they were looking for someone to take over. Now most mates on a road trip would discuss this dream opportunity over a couple of beers and promptly forget about it once they got home. But these weren’t just any three friends they were heavyweights of the German spirits scene. Steffen Lohr is a former bartender and Bacardi ambassador Sebastian Brack created Thomas Henry lemonade and cofounded Belsazar Vermouth and finally Bastian Heuser set up Bar Convent Berlin Europe’s leading trade fair for the bar and drinks industry. So in 2016 this talented trio took over the distillery with just eight employees renamed themselves SpreeWood Distillers and started making Germany’s first rye whiskey. And rather fittingly they’ve just delivered a new baby called Stork Club.
