97 points “With notes of spices black cherry morello cherry and black fruit the bouquet is impressively complex and delicious. On the palate the vinous texture fine bubbles depth and complexity allow for a long chalky chiselled finish. This is a gastronomic Champagne rosé with great ageing potential.” – Decanter Magazine
96 points “Taittinger is using more Pinot Noir and opting for longer sur lattes maturation for this bottling and the result is that Comtes Rosé is becoming a more gastronomic Champagne.” – Wine Advocate
Comtes de Champagne Taittinger’s beloved prestige cuvée is widely acknowledged as being one of the most elegant and intensely aromatic Champagnes on the planet. Made only in exceptional vintages using entirely the first press juice from Grand Cru vineyards. The blend consists of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay including 15% red wine to impart that rose gold colour it’s then aged for 12 years before being released from the cellar.
2008 was an incredible vintage in Champagne. The experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate haven’t rated a year as highly as this one since their records began in 1970 and Decanter described it as “something special” praising the “powerful fruit and scintillating acidity” and calling the wines “real keepers”. That makes this a very exciting release. Dusty pink it shimmers with the snaking beads of fine bubbles releasing aromas of red and black berries sweetly spiced plum crumble orange zest exotic spices peaches dried herbs and freshly baked baguette. On the palate comes a captivating combo of almond croissants wild strawberries blackcurrant sorbet dried flowers pear sage butter waxy pink grapefruit and blood orange mint Himalayan pink salt and chalk. Although slightly reserved at this stage the complexity is mesmerising and the breath-taking freshness suggests a long future ahead of it for those with the patience to cellar it.
Taittinger’s vineyards date back to 1734 and were owned by Jacques Fourneaux. The château was bought by Pierre Taittinger in 1932 and the business prides itself on being one of the last remaining independent family-owned Champagne houses – still run by the name on the label. Their Comtes de Champagne is a wine on an incredible run of form that collectors and connoisseurs should be all over.
