Tatenokawa’s new, highly limited release was made to commemorate the 2023 Japan tour of Grammy Award-winning French indie pop band, Phoenix. Tatenokawa’s sakes are always something special and this exciting version is a Junmai Daiginjo style that’s been made with Yamadanishiki rice polished to 18% (meaning 82% of the rice is polished away) creating a very refined and luxuriously elegant style of sake.

The bottle is presented in a box that’s decorated with artwork inspired by the Phoenix song, Winter Solstice from their current album titled Alpha Zulu. The video is in black and white and inspires the cloud artwork that decorates the gift box. Every box contains a card that is signed by each member of the band and comes with a limited-edition Phoenix Ochoko (sake cup) which will arrive separate to the box.

There are only 500 bottles worldwide of this super rare release and only 24 in the UK, but luckily, we’ve managed to secure six of them so don’t miss out.

Tatenokawa (meaning “Castle Brook”) is a sake producer with a long and illustrious history, going back almost two hundred years. What we love about them is that they don’t get bogged down in all that tradition though, leaving them free to innovate and spread the word of sake culture throughout the world. So, expect a very modern style of sake aimed at a younger audience, and also one or two very exciting celebrity collaborations. Located in Sakata City, Tatenokawa was the first brewery in Yamagata Prefecture to make only Junmai Daiginjo – the most refined kind of sake. They focus on locally grown rice and particularly one called Dewasansan, a sake-specific rice that creates complex, slightly sweet and wonderfully aromatic flavours that remind us of top-quality Pinot Gris.
