The Sassicaia 2017 is an absolute masterclass in how to make elegant wine in a hot vintage. The value for money is also looking very keen compared to its predecessor – the 2016 – whose price has skyrocketed since receiving a 100-point score from Wine Advocate. Quite how the team at Tenuta San Guido managed to retain so much finesse and such exotic aromatics during such a warm growing season is a mystery but that’s what makes Sassicaia so special. As respected wine critic Antonio puts it this “is a wild exotic beauty. Sumptuous and flamboyantly ripe the 2017 captures all the personality of the year in spades.” Curvy and racy with a wonderfully creamy texture and notes of plum crumble cherry liqueur blackcurrants pomegranate wild herbs brambles meadow flowers and barbeque spices; but volumes were down by 15% on this intriguing vintage so don’t miss out.
