Distilled at the beginning of World War II this rare Macallan was matured for 30 years in Sherry casks before being bottled by Gordon & MacPhail. Although it’s hard to imagine now times were tough for Macallan during the 1930s and 1940s so Gordon & MacPhail helped them to survive by buying batches of their Scotch. Many of these were released and sent to the Italian market. This particular bottling from 1939 was imported by Donini and created for Eduardo ‘Baffo’ Giaccone the owner of a bar and whisky shop a passionate connoisseur and one of the first people outside of Scotland to have their own bottling. It has now come back to the UK as one of the last remaining examples of Macallan-Glenlivet distillation from the 1930s. Created at a time when peat smoke was still a big part of Macallan’s character and coal was still being used you might find an unexpected smoky note in this rich complex and mature dram.

Established in 1865 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Speyside the independent family-run business Gordon & MacPhail has been bottling extraordinary whiskies for over 120 years. Their Aladdin’s cave of a warehouse in Elgin is home to more than 7 500 casks from some 70 different distilleries. Nobody knows more about this business than the experts at Gordon & MacPhail. They are masters of the cask and rumour has it that they do such a good job of maturing their whisky that sometimes Macallan asks to buy them back. Well they’re not having this one.

“Macallan is the daddy as far as legendary whiskies go ” so says whisky expert Ian Buxton. This Speyside behemoth enjoys huge global demand perfectly illustrated by a 30-year-old cask breaking auction records when it sold for $375 000 (US) in Hong Kong. Deservedly so it remains the aficionado’s choice when it comes to Scotch.
