The first edition was inspired by chocolate and sold out rapidly. The follow up celebrates the world of coffee and continues to shine a light on the brand’s sustainability journey and their deep connection to nature.
Intense Arabica pays homage to Ethiopia – the birthplace of coffee. It was here that the first arabica beans were cultivated, and it continues to produce some of the finest coffee on the planet to this day. The Macallan’s Whisky Maker, Steven Bremner, immersed himself in the world of coffee by hosting a masterclass at The Macallan Estate with a grower, a roaster, a historian, a barista, a coffee artist and a paper expert. Together they created a whisky that has a flavour profile that mimics wild-varietal coffee beans from Harrar (famed for its stone-walled city, hyenas and bold coffee) and Guji (a forested and largely untouched area in the south of the country). Intense Arabica does not contain coffee, but it has been crafted using Sherry-seasoned casks that displayed natural flavours reminiscent of roasted coffee beans. Those notes perfectly complement the distillery’s signature sticky Medjool date, cinnamon, vanilla, honey and oak character, teasing out the suggestion of tiramisu, cappuccino, gingerbread, sugared almond, dark chocolate, blackberry, raisin, brazil nut and dark roast espresso.
In honour of its chocolate influence, Intense Arabica is packaged in a gift box made using coffee bean husks, a by-product of the coffee-making process that would normally be discarded.
