We’ve long believed that a well-made gin and tonic is an ancient work of art that deserves a place in the most prestigious of museums. And it seems that we weren’t alone…
The Ashmolean Dry Gin is a collaboration between the eco-friendly folk at The Oxford Artisan Distillery and the Ashmolean Museum – the University of Oxford’s Museum of Art and Archaeology. Founded in 1683 the Ashmolean Museum’s collections range from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art telling human stories across cultures and through history. But don’t get worried this gin hasn’t been created by distilling a mummified pharaoh. Instead inspired by the wide-ranging depth and breadth of the museum’s displays The Oxford Artisan Distillery has crafted the Ashmolean Dry Gin using 17 botanicals from around the world.
There’s exotic jara lemon (a knobbly green citrus from Bangladesh) rose jasmine and spices from the Middle East and Asia. From this juniper-led gin you can expect The Oxford Artisan Distillery’s signature richness plus notes of cardamom myrrh orris and lemongrass. The label design comes from the museum’s Eastern Art Collection and features Morning Glory by Takeuchi Seiho master of the pre-WWII Kyoto circle of painters. So fix up a gin and tonic (the distillery recommends a 1:3 ratio with light tonic and a garnish of orange) and maybe settle in with an educational documentary if you like your viewing as dry as your gin. Failing that A Night at the Museum or The Mummy might be rather fitting.
The Oxford Artisan Distillery opened its doors in the summer of 2017 and unbelievably it marked the first legal distillation in the city’s history. The team are fascinated by heritage grains sustainable farming and a grain-to-glass ethos. They’re not interested in homogenous commercial bought-in-bulk seeds grown in the opposite of a natural ecosystem. So they took influence from wheat and rye discovered in Medieval thatched roofs which lead them to discover what would have been grown in the local area during ancient times. They then work with organic farms that use no pesticides fungicides chemical fertilisers or manure and who undersow their crops with clover. As a result the fields are brimming with wildflowers insects birds and biodiversity. Now that’s an eco-friendly spirit that this country can be very proud of.
