Every year since 2001, Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender, Dr Craig Wilson, the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor, and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code, providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries, plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.
The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 Year Old Special Release 2022 has undergone a second maturation in casks kissed with wine. It was inspired by a legend of a bewitching enchantress who lived in the emerald caverns of the River Ord. Each solstice, she is said to weave the currents of water into rich, indulgent, ruby-red wine. Maybe this wine-laced Scotch was distilled on just such a day. As mesmerising as its label, this whisky runs with a river of spicy wood, crème brûlée, candlewax, fiery gingerbread, tart berries, barley sugar sweets, gooseberry sorbet and red grapes. A seductive siren of a dram.
The Singleton brand is actually a trio of single malts; Dufftown and Glendullan from Speyside and the grassy and fruity Glen Ord from the Black Isle to the west, the latter being famed for its golden barley and pure water. Diageo launched this super-smooth brand in 2006 in a bid to rival the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, and eventually become the world’s number one selling malt. Established in 1838, Glen Ord is the oldest of the three distilleries in the family and the award-winning whisky produced there is known for its red and black fruits (which is probably what the fish on their logo is leaping out of the water to reach). Much of The Singleton of Glen Ord finds its way into blends like Johnnie Walker and Dewar’s, so uncovering a natural-strength Single Malt tends to be a rare and fleeting thing.
